What If You Meet A Stray - How Can You Help?
In Singapore's bustling city environment, it could be odd to see a little street puppy or a street dog.
If you see a street puppy, observe the situation first as there might be a mummy near by who is watching over her litter. Offer some food and water and move away. If the puppies are in any danger (near a busy road or a drain) or if they are ill or extremely skinny, you can then access the situation and a vet visit might be a good idea for the ill puppy. Do not pick the puppies up if they look healthy and well as mummy may no longer accept them due to a new smell.
Here are somethings you can do if you see an adult street dog.
1. Study the situation
- If the dog is in the middle of a busy road, do not give chase, observe and watch if it knows where it is going.
- If the dog is running, do not give chase, you will make the situation worse.
- If the dog is in a construction site or area where there is little human movement, it is likely living there, LEAVE it alone.
2. Observe the condition of the dogs
- If this dog is a pet and has a collar of tag, approach it and try to get it to a vet to scan its microchip.
- Call the AVA and SPCA to check of anyone is looking for it.
- If there is no microchip, you can also place ADs on Facebook for a lost dog or posters around the neighborhood you found it in.
- If the dog is a street dog and accustomed and calm in its environment, leave it alone.
- If it is injured/ill, approach slowly and gain trust by feeding it. Do NOT throw anything at it. If you can get a leash on , great. If you cannot, call the SPCA for assistance.
3. Provide it with shelter
Help foster your newfound friend while you try to locate its owner or find it a loving family — or adopt him/her, if you’ve already fallen irrevocably in love! Before taking the dog to an animal-welfare group, consider that these organisations are often stretched to their limits with other rescues and existing residents.
If you really need help!
CAS gets calls and emails daily and we all work Full time! We love dogs as much as you. CAS is made up of volunteers and no paid staff. We may not be able to catch this dog if you cannot get near it either. We also may not have the time or opportunity to head down if work prevents this.
However, if this is truly urgent, email [email protected]:
1. Date & time the dog was first spotted
2. Your name/hp
3. Male/Female
4. Temperament and physical condition of the dog
5. Attach picture(s) of the dog
